Reading/Language Arts
Consultant
Lynne Shapiro is called the Reading/Language Arts Consultant at Elizabeth Green School. Although she spends a large part of her day instructing children in reading, she also sees children who need assistance in spelling and writing. In other words, she covers all aspects of literacy.
Mrs. Shapiro provides reading instruction to children from various grades. She helps them learn strategies for reading the words and, most importantly, comprehending the text. For those children who have difficulty with reading comprehension, she offers activities that stretch the children's thinking skills. Through problem solving and discussion, the children begin to understand how thinking works.
Spelling is another area Mrs. Shapiro has focused on with small groups of children. She likes to think of spelling instruction as "word study" so that children begin to grasp how our language works and develop some understanding of the patterns in English.
In order to help students in writing, Mrs. Shapiro has spent time in classrooms, modeling various writing strategies. Some of these lessons also provide an opportunity for teachers to see some different approaches for writing instruction. In addition, Mrs. Shapiro has presented district-wide workshops on various strategies teachers can use during reading, spelling, and writing instruction.
Assessment is another important aspect of Mrs. Shapiro's job. She tests new students in reading and sometimes writing. As questions arise about a student's performance in reading, writing, or spelling, Mrs. Shapiro often assesses a child's achievement and suggests techniques that teachers might use in the classroom.
If you were to follow Mrs. Shapiro through a typical day at E. Green School, you would see why she never gets tired of her job. Everyday is a little bit different than the day before and is filled with challenges and excitement due to the ever changing needs of children and teachers.
Reading Recovery
Reading Recovery is an early intervention program designed to help first grade students to become successful readers. A trained Reading Recovery teacher works individually with first grade students who meet the Reading Recovery qualifications. Students who qualify receive 30 minutes of daily, intensive, one-to-one instruction. Reading and writing abilities are developed within lessons that use natural language and predictable text.
