Preschool children with
special needs may attend the Early Childhood Program at John Paterson
School. This program is available to
all identified children with special needs that live in the Paterson and
Chaffee districts. At a Planning and
Placement meeting the team determines the child's eligibility and develops an
Individualized Education Plan (IEP) specific to the child's needs. The IEP is then implemented in the Early
Childhood Program. This program is
available to children who are three and four years old.
The children in the
Early Childhood Program have the opportunity to learn and play with typically
developing peers who are three, four, and five. The typically developing children must be three by September 1st
of the school year and toilet trained. There is a tuition fee for this
program. The program is theme based and
developmentally appropriate for preschool children. A typical session may include opportunities for free play, story
and circle time, music and movement, and directed small group learning. The three year old children meet on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday mornings. The
afternoon session for four year olds meets every afternoon with children
attending three or four sessions per week.
The program team
includes a speech/language pathologist, a full time aide, a full time special
education teacher, tutors, and the services of the nurse, occupational
therapist, physical therapist, and school psychologist when appropriate. Additional support is provided if the PPT
determines it is necessary for the safety and well being of the child. Transportation is provided for children with
special needs. Parents provide transportation for all other children.
