FIFTH GRADE

The 5th grade guidance program is part of a comprehensive developmental program that begins in 5th grade and continues through 12th grade.  Each child participates in a series of classroom lessons designed to deliver curriculum that is developmentally appropriate.  The 5th grade curriculum covers topics such as respecting differences of others, turning negative thoughts into positive thoughts, an introduction to career options and preparation for the transition to 6th grade.

SIXTH GRADE

In grade 6, students concentrate on personal, social, and career development.  During developmental guidance classes, topics include understanding 6th grade academic expectations, self and others, offensive behaviors, decision-making, and charting career development.

In addition to the classroom lessons, your child may participate in individual counseling or small group sessions on an as needed basis.  Group topics may include building friendships, family issues/divorce, and self-confidence.  These groups are not intended to be therapeutic but to allow students the opportunity to share common thoughts and experiences.

SEVENTH GRADE

The 7th grade developmental guidance curriculum teaches awareness and skills on the topics of diversity/differences, managing offensive behavior and career interests.  Counselors respond to student needs and concerns in these areas, as well as provide on-going support for immediate needs of students whether personal/social, academic or career exploration.  This support may be provided through individual or group counseling, teacher consultation, or referral to a school or outside service.

The Career Card is an on-going, individual planning activity.  The 7th grade year provides developing self-awareness in personal/social, academic and career interests.  Counselors work with academic teachers to group and place students at the 8th grade level.

School counselors establish and maintain activities that support student growth and development.  They are available for standardized test interpretation, parent education, and collaboration of curriculum with the Health/Wellness teacher.

EIGHTH GRADE

The 8th grade developmental guidance curriculum emphasizes academic and career development by offering various activities:

  • Career Interest Inventory
    • Self-Directed Search
