Special Education
John Wallace Middle School has four full time special education teachers, part time services of physical therapists and occupational therapists, part time services of the speech and language clinician, one teacher of the gifted, a full time school psychologist and tutors and assistors assigned annually based on needs of the students. Components of the Special Education Program include but are not limited to: · Testing: The special education teachers test students for initial evaluations, annual evaluations, and triennial or reevaluations. · Team Meetings: The special education and general education teachers consult and collaborate to discuss student concerns and develop specific plans for improvement. · Co-Teaching: The special education and general education teachers meet to plan lessons utilizing various co-teaching approaches based on student need and curriculum content. Special needs students are taught within the general education setting in an Inclusion model with pull out services available when necessary to meet individual needs. The teachers work together modifying curriculum, adjusting to learning styles, differentiating instruction, providing skills and instructional practices that meet the individual needs of all students. · Planning and Placement Team Meetings (PPT): Special education and general education teachers attend these meetings and discuss the needs of students and make recommendations based on pre-referral strategies implemented, classroom observations, and progress made within the classroom. This information is used to better plan an appropriate education for the student. Testing and assessment is reviewed and updated Individual Educational Plans are implemented to best meet the individual student needs within the least restrictive environment. |
