School and Community Coordinator: Mrs. Marie Parker

As School and Community Coordinator, I would like to welcome you to John Wallace.. My goal is to keep parents involved and aware of what goes on at our middle school.

One of my jobs during the school year is to help out the staff of John Wallace, filling various requests in the classroom and at special events. They consist of volunteering at the book fairs, volunteering in the classrooms, and helping in the media center. If you have an interest in volunteering your time at the school, please feel free to call me. John Wallace is always receptive to parents being part of the middle school experience.

Another aspect of my job is reaching out to the community. I contact the local newspapers of special interest stories (Red Ribbon Week, Disability Week, ROPE, mentor programs) community service projects (Earth Day, Hoops for Hearts, Food Drives) classroom activities (Spirit of America Days, Colonial Feast, Career Day, Japan Web Quest) and our music and theater programs. If there is a special interest story you think our community would be interested in, please call me at the school (667-5888 ext. 0) and we can discuss it.

I look forward to working with you during the school year.

ESOL Teacher: Mrs. Betsy Schiavone

The ESOL program (English for Speakers of Other Languages) is designed to meet the individual needs of eligible students.  The ESOL teacher, Ann Barber, serves students at Newington High School and both middle schools.

The curriculum focuses on English speaking, listening, reading and writing through study of novels, short stories, newspapers and other non-fiction articles.  Vocabulary development is a key component, as well as understanding American culture.  Mrs. Barber assesses ESOL students' proficiency levels and serves as a liaison to content teachers.

Reading and Language Arts Consultant: Mrs. Elizabeth Lasker

The Reading/Language Arts Consultant serves as a resource person to teachers in coordinating the reading/language arts program.  Assistance is given to teachers in the recommendation, selection, and implementation of instructional materials.  Service is provided to students within and outside the classroom setting based on individual need.
